Pottery meant to be used.

Kim throws each mug, bowl, and vase individually. She paints every layer of glaze on with a brush rather than dipping the piece, leaving small variations from one surface to the next. She also makes garden pieces, jewelry, and sculpture.

Meet Kim

Kim Blais,
potter.

Kim works from her home studio in Coeur d’Alene. She throws most of her functional pottery on the wheel and builds sculpture and smaller pieces by hand.

Her work is sold at Emerge and Jungle Relics in Coeur d’Alene, at seasonal markets, and in this shop.

03 / The process

How a piece is made.

A wheel-thrown piece usually goes through these five steps.

  1. 01

    Shape

    Kim centers the clay and shapes it on the wheel. Sculptural pieces are built by hand.

  2. 02

    Trim

    After the clay stiffens, Kim trims the piece. Handles and other details are added at this stage.

  3. 03

    Bisque fire

    The dry piece goes through its first kiln firing. This makes it strong enough to handle and ready to accept glaze.

  4. 04

    Glaze

    Kim paints every layer of glaze on by hand rather than dipping the piece, then cleans the foot before the second firing.

  5. 05

    Glaze fire

    The final firing makes the stoneware durable and brings out the finished color and surface.
